Dorothy A. (Slutz) Howdyshell

Dorothy A. Howdyshell, 88, joined her Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 26, 2017. Dorothy enjoyed her life as a mother and wife first, a grandmother and great-grandmother, a friend to many, an excellent cook, baker and fudge-maker, a church-goer, an Eastern Star, a bowler and card player. Her husband said her smile lit up any room she was in. She and Joe travelled extensively for both her and Joe’s positions in the Masonic bodies, and had great fun doing so.

Dorothy Slutz married Walter Jr. “Joe” Howdyshell on January 19, 1947, and had three children.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Walter Steven and a great grandchild, Ivy Jannette Kelly.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and Charles Slutz, and four brothers, William, Richard, Linford and John Slutz. 

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Karen (Wm. Sven) Lindberg, her son, Mark (Carol) Howdyshell, and nine grandchildren: Jessica Howdyshell (Mark Hoffman), Nori (Tim) George, Catherine (Eric) Penrod, Will (Tiffany) Lindberg, Alicia Lindberg, Rachel Howdyshell (Mark Johnson), Sarah (Robert) Kelly, Emily (Tracy) Dayton and Alex (Amber Sheeks) Howdyshell.  She has 13 great-grandchildren: Luken, Egan, Abby, Whitney, Maddy, Aubrey, Addison, Rhett, Benjamin, Jackson, Nora, Alice and Henry. She is also survived by four brothers, Earl, Edward, Victor and Verl Slutz; two brothers-in law, David (Shirley) and Russell  (Polly) Howdyshell; five sisters-in-law, Helen Helser, Barbara Callahan, Dorothy (Ron) Sidwell, Mary (Bob) Shonkwiler, and Betty (Jack Allen) Groshong; and many nieces and nephews who fondly remember their Aunt Dot.

Calling hours will be held from 4-8pm with Eastern Star service at 8pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at the Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street, New Lexington, Ohio. Dorothy’s life will be celebrated at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the funeral home with her brother, Rev. Victor Slutz, officiating. Family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the New Lexington Cemetery, 440 Swigart Street, New Lexington. To honor Dorothy, do what she would do and bake cookies for someone.
