Michael “Mike” Dean Baker won victory over his battle with cancer when he went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, January 8, 2017 surrounded by family and friends. Cancer took his body, but by the grace of our God, it could not touch his soul.
Born October 2, 1951 in Lancaster, Ohio to the late Rev. E.V. and Doris May Morton Baker.
Mike lived his life faithfully in the service of Christ from a very early age. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marjorie Kay Knight Baker; they have 3 daughters, Kimberly (Timothy) Thompson, Melissa (Scott) Schmeltzer and Heather (Carl) Wollett; 8 grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Link, Emma (Kyle) Mosack, Issac and Luke Schmeltzer; Curtis, Alex and Katie Myers; 4 great-grandchildren, Josie and Michael Mosack; Devin and Lillian Link; as well as many nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In addition to his parents, preceded in death by 2 brothers, Willard (Betty) Baker and Virgil (Doris) Baker and a sister, Eileen (David) VanFossen.
Mike was employed by Diamond Power in Lancaster, Ohio for 40 years where he made many life-long friends. Mike pastored at the Hocking Valley Tabernacle in Oreville, Ohio for many years with his father while raising his family and teaching his children about living for Jesus by both lesson and example. He was a true patriarch of the Christian faith and left a legacy far above measure.
Mike and his family attended the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as trustee and deacon at different times in his life. He loved working with his hands, including woodworking, carpentry and working on cars and tractors. He also enjoyed working in the yard and spending time with his family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Timothy Moore for the many years of compassionate care that he provided Mike and his loving wife Kay. They would also like to thank FairHoPe Hospice for going above and beyond to both care for Mike in his final hours and to support his family as they stood by his side as he made his transition from this life to eternity with Jesus. Finally they would like to express their heart-felt appreciation to Pastor Steve Hubbard for spending so many hours with the family praying, consoling and sharing sweet memories with one another.
Calling hours will be held from 2-4pm & 6-8pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 and from 10am-11am on Thursday at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 6935 Township Road 234, SW, Logan, Ohio.
