Gus Chuvalas Obituary

Gus E. Chuvalas. Formerly of New Lexington, Ohio, age 91, passed away on February 4, 2023 at the Pickering House in Lancaster, Ohio. Gus was born April 22, 1931 in Corning, Perry County, Ohio, a son of John Konstantine Chuvalas and Clara Mae Drake Chuvalas. He was a lifelong resident of Perry County, Ohio.

 At the age of 16, Gus entered the US Army and was assigned to the Combat Infantry Division and subsequently sent to Japan for four years. He was then deployed to North Korea from which he was discharged in May 1952-the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with five bronze stars as well as a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in battle.

Gus married the former June White on April 3, 1953 at the New Lexington Church of the Nazarene and had four children-Sharon, Jim, Mike and Rick Chuvalas. He retired in 1993 with 38 years of service from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction where he worked as a Correctional Supervisor at the Southeastern Correctional Institution. He was a member of the American Legion Post 188 of New Lexington, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Underage Veterans, Korean War Association, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Association, AmVets and the Forty and Eighters. He was an avid OSU Buckeye fan and a proud supporter of his grandchildren and all their endeavors.

Gus is survived by his wife, June of 69 years; daughter, Sharon Chuvalas of Westerville, Ohio; sons, James (Debbie) Chuvalas of Lithopolis, Ohio; Michael (Karen) Chuvalas of Marysville, Ohio; and Richard (Diana) Chuvalas of Lancaster, Ohio; Six grandchildren-Tiffany Chuvalas, Brandon (Melissa) Chuvalas, Amber (Chaz) DeLeon, Austin (Nicole) Chuvalas, Nick (Emily) Chuvalas, Christopher (Elizabeth) Chuvalas; four step grandchildren-Annie O’Dell, Nicki  (Kevin) Lawson, Dani (Jeff) Gray, and Carmen (Cody) Mcgirr and several great grandchildren. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara Chuvalas, his siblings-Thelma, Rose, Dorothy, Betty, Jim, Tim, John, Hank and one grandchild, Ashley Renee Chuvalas.

Calling hours will be held from 10am-1pm on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at the Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street, New Lexington, Ohio. Services will be conducted at the funeral home by his son Reverend James A. Chuvalas, followed by military service at the burial site in Maplewood Cemetery in New Lexington, Ohio.
