Joseph B. Ogden, 77 of New Lexington, Ohio, former Insurance Agent, Real Estate Broker, Auctioneer, Volunteer Fireman, Minstrel Show End Man, Hozay’s Ice Man, Professional BS Artist, not-so-professional golfer, teller of tall tales, singer of silly songs, walker of invisible dogs, collector of humorous obituaries and longtime distributor of laughs; told his final inappropriate joke on September 20, 2022.
Born October 1, 1944 in the caretaker’s house on the Wohrle Estate at Buckeye Lake (if you look close there is a plaque that says, “Joe Ogden was born here”, where the house used to be or so we’ve heard) to parents Byron “Barney” and Elizabeth Jane Miller Ogden.
Joe was very civic minded, having been a long time member of many local organizations including the New Lexington Elks (PER), New Lexington Eagles, New Lexington Lions Club, Jaycees, a lifetime member of the Perry County Grange, former member of NLCS and Hocking College Boards. Many will remember Joe from the hundreds of charity/fundraiser auctions he called over the years especially Toy-for-Tots, the Junction City Fireman’s Ball, Crooksville/Roseville Pottery Festival, Perry County DU and many others. He had an uncanny ability to squeeze one more bid out of some of our local officials by looking for a bid from the candidate running against them.
Joe is survived by his wife of 46 years, Diane Wolfe Ogden; daughter, Amy Reeves; son, Robb (Darcy) Ogden; grandchildren, Jacob (Staci Newsome) Reeves and Bethany Reeves, Bo and Mia Ogden; great-granddaughter, Arya Reeves and many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Van Ness, Katherine Gartner and April Ogden.
Calling hours will be held from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm with Elks Services at 7:45 pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at the Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street, New Lexington, Ohio.
