Mary Cronin Obituary

Mary Louise Furney Cronin, 95, of New Lexington stepped into Heaven on October 27, 2022,  at 1: 45 p.m. , surrounded by her children.  She was born February 23, 1927, in Moxahala, the daughter of Robert H. and Izora P. Holcomb Furney.

Mary graduated from Moxahala High School, where she was the salutatorian of the class of 1944.  After graduation,  she attended Meredith Business College, while working for her uncle, Nial Holcomb, at his Crooksville grocery store.  Upon completion of her business classes, Mary worked in the office for the Line Material Company in Zanesville for seven years.  After marriage to the love of her life, John Cronin,  they began their family and Mary spent her time raising her children.  Later on, Mary also worked at the Sears Catalog Store in New Lexington.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, John E. Cronin, who  died on Nov.23, 1999.  She is survived by her children, Carla (Dean) Colborn;  Janet (Dan) Stanton; Paula Cannon (Dick Steen); and John D. Cronin;  her grandchildren, Tim Stanton, Sara Cannon, Joe Cannon, Katie (Clayton) McCoy, Chelsea (Lloyd) Simcox and Jacob (Jessica) Cannon;  great-grandchildren,  Rocco Stanton, Carson, Cade , Cohen and  Cole McCoy, Erin and Colby Simcox,  Jacoby, Josie and Jonah Cannon.

In addition to her parents and her in-laws, Zaddock and Mildred Cronin, Mary was preceded in death by one brother, Gene and sister-in-law Evelyn Furney; and brothers-in- law and sisters-in-law, Lester and Mary Cronin Savage and Robert and Hazel Cronin Shaner.

Mary always attended Oakfield Baptist Church and was a member since 1937. For many years, Mary served as the church pianist/organist. She was a member of the church’s Women’s Circle and the New Lexington Music Study Club.

Mary never missed watching the Cincinnati Reds through thick and thin, and the OSU football and boys basketball games. Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune were favorites, as well.  She always enjoyed family celebrations, growing flowers, crafts, sewing and quilting.  Her grandchildren spent many happy hours at her home.

We would like to thank Janet Irvine for providing love and care for Mary these past several years, enabling us to keep mom at her home.  Mom grew to love and depend upon Jan and greatly missed her when she couldn’t be there.  Also, many thanks to Fairhope Hospice employees (and angels) Becky, Andrea, chaplain Naomi, social worker Naomi, and nurse Gretchen for loving care and support for mom and us these last few days.

Visitation will be at the Roberts Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street New Lexington, on Tuesday, November 1st from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 2nd at 11:00 am with one hour of viewing preceding the service  with Pastor Sanford Short officiating.   Burial will follow in the New Lexington Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be sent to Oakfield Baptist Church, c/o Vicky West, 4270 Bristol Old State Road, South, New Lexington OH 43764.
