Roger Lee Newlon

Roger Lee Newlon, 91, of Christiansburg, Virginia died Thursday, July 4, 2024 at Lewis Gale Hospital in Montgomery, Virginia.

Born May 5, 1933 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Arthur and Helen Westenbarger Newlon.

Roger was a native of New Lexington and graduated from New Lexington High School in 1951. He served in the Army National Guard and retired from AT&T in Columbus, Ohio. He was an outstanding bowler, having recorded multiple 300 games. He loved fishing and riding trail bikes with his best friend, Bob Gray, also of New Lexington. Roger’s wit and long term memory were extraordinary. He could recite poems he learned in grade school and recite the Gettysburg address word for word from memory. Roger was a devout Christian. His faith in God never wavered. He loved his family and never met a stranger. His Church family in Christainsburg, Virginia was dear to him and a most important part of his life in his later years.

Roger is survived by his wife Phoebe-Poff Newlon, Christainsburg, Va; daughter, Susan (John) Vernon; son, Michael (Meirong) Newlon; 3 grandchildren, Melissa (Adam) Azbell, Jeremy Hill (Jill), Matthew Newlon; 5 great-grandchildren, Taylor Westkamp, Katie, Jordon, Lucy and Ashley Hill; stepdaughter, Debbie Poff, Riner, Va; stepson, Bob Poff (Amy), Franklin, Tn; step-grandson, Will Poff (Leslie), Colorado Springs, Co; step granddaughter, Abby Poff, Durham, NC

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Nancy J. Newlon and his son, Tom Newlon.

Calling hours will be held 5-7pm on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street, New Lexington, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at the funeral home with Reverend Richard Newlon officiating.

Burial with graveside military services will follow in New Lexington Cemetery, New Lexington, Ohio.
