Walter Grigsby Obituary

Walter J. Grigsby, age 96, died December 24, 2020.  Walter was born on February 22, 1924 and lived most of his life in Junction City, OH.  He was the son of Harry and Carrie Grigsby and brother to Ken and Zola.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, who died in 1983.  They were married for 36 years.  He is survived by their three daughters, Patricia (Geoff), Marsha and Sue (Mike), his granddaughters, Lindsey, Erin (Jason), and Sara, and four great-grandchildren.

Walter graduated from Junction City High School in 1942 and was a member of the basketball team.  After graduating, he served in the US Navy during World War II.  He received basic engineering and diesel training stateside.  A majority of his service was spent in the South Pacific, including time in the New Hebrides Islands, New Caledonia, New Zealand and completing his tour of duty in the Philippines. 

He worked for many years at the Junction City Clay Company, the Rush Creek Clay Company and retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation.  After retirement, he worked part-time as a security guard at Lempco. 

Walter was a volunteer fireman on the Junction City Fire Department, served on the Junction City Board of Affairs and was a Junction City Council Member for 12 years.  He was a lifetime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Junction City, a member of the American Legion Post 376 of Junction City, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Walter served as the Junction City July 4th Grand Marshal in 2015.

Special thanks to Max and Karla Griggs for their friendship and the many cookies he had for breakfast.  The family also wishes to thank the staff of Primrose Retirement Communities in Lancaster where he lived since 2017 for their care and kindness.  Additional thanks to Fair Hope Hospice and Palliative Care.

In honor of Walter’s life, memorial contributions may be made to the Perry County Senior Nutrition Program (Meals-on-Wheels), PO Box 605, New Lexington, OH  43764.

Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 11:00am at St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday January 16, 2021.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
